Matsatsantsa to announce ‘surprise signing’ next week

Gordon Igesund ducked questions about challenging for the Premier League title like the plague last season. But on Wednesday‚ soon after SuperSport United launched their rather bizarre grey away kit‚ the coach admitted the stakes were higher in his first full campaign with the Tshwane side.“I am certainly not saying we are going to win the championship‚ but what I am saying is that we want to be one of the teams challenging for the title. I know from experience that it is not an easy task because there’s teams like Chiefs‚ Pirates‚ Sundowns‚ Wits and SuperSport and any one of these teams can win the championship. Having won four championships before‚ I always want the next one‚” Igesund said.He arrived to replace Cavin Johnson in September last year and — although mathematically possible at the halfway mark of the season — claimed it would be a stretch for SuperSport to topple the then log leaders and eventual champions Chiefs. Matsatsantsa finished in sixth place in the 2014-15 campaign.Usually cautious when discussing his targets‚ Igesund said a satisfactory pre-season and the arrival of Michael Boxall (New Zealand)‚ Grant Kekana‚ Isaka Cernak (Australia) and NFD Golden Boot-holder Phumelele Bhengu would give his side a good fighting chance.“The biggest challenge I have is to integrate the players‚ but I am not the only coach with that challenge‚” he explained.“I suppose you could say this squad was hand-picked because I identified [Jeremy] Brockie and Boxall when I was with Bafana. There are two more players that we have earmarked‚ one of them being Bongani Khumalo if he stays in the country. After that the chequebook will be closed.”Adding weight to their title ambition talks has been club CEO Stan Matthews‚ who also revealed on Wednesday that Matsatsantsa will be announcing a “surprise signing” next week. He denied that it would be one of Itumeleng Khune‚ Mandla Masango or Tefu Mashamaite‚ who are clubless after leaving Chiefs at the end of last season.SuperSport were offered Masango by one of his numerous representatives‚ but it appears Matthews is not interested.“We conceded far too many goals last season hence we have tightened up at the back. I know we have a really strong strike force and I think that is going to be the secret because they want to score goals‚” said Igesund. – The Times..
