Brazil and Barcelona star striker Neymar could be the subject of a world-record bid from Manchester United as the Premier League giants look to add a marquee signing to their squad.

British tabloid The Sun on Sunday quoted a “top” Barcelona source who claimed United have enquired about the availability of the Brazil captain after making a secret approach for the 23-year-old.

The source told the tabloid: “United are one of the biggest clubs in the world so it is right they should be chasing a player who has the potential to be the best player on the planet.”

According to the tabloid, executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward, who is in charge of transfers at Old Trafford, has travelled to the Camp Nou on three separate occasions in the past two months.

According to another report in the Guardian, coach Luis Enrique refused to comment on speculation surrounding the forward’s future after Barcelona began their La Liga title defence with a 1-0 victory at Athletic Bilbao.

“It doesn’t interest me to talk about rumours, nor these types of situations,” said Enrique at his post match briefing.
