Wits CEO denies putting R15 million price tag on Vilakazi

There were no final day of the transfer window offers for Bidvest Wits’ star playmaker Sibusiso Vilakazi‚ said Wits CEO Jose Ferreira. According to media reports‚ Mamelodi Sundowns put in a big last-minute offer for the 2013-14 PSL player of the season as the window closed on Monday. However‚ Ferreira said these had been pure speculation. The Clever Boys’ CEO also denied reports there had ever been a R15-million price tag on the technically gifted player.“It’s like this — reading the media reports as they came out during the day‚ I felt like there was a soap opera written about my club‚ where I had absolutely no idea what they were talking about‚” Ferreira said on Tuesday.“It’s not speculation. It was absolute bull**** — that’s the word. Anyway‚ the media can entertain themselves. They’re liking the script — we know nothing about it.”Ferreira has been angered by a figure of R15m reported on as Wits’ asking price for Vilakazi.“I’ll tell you why I do want to make a comment. It irks me that for four weeks I had to listen to the media talk about a R15-million price Wits had put on the player‚” the CEO said.“The figure R15-million has never come out of my mouth‚ or any club I have spoken to‚ other than the media. That figure was never discussed.“I’d like you to quote me — unfortunately in South African football‚ all it takes is for a so-called journalist to throw out a number. And then for four weeks you have to listen to everyone commenting on the reasonableness of the R15-million price tag.“But unfortunately you can’t stop people — if they want to say what they want to say‚ they will say it.“Wits have never fixed a price tag on Sibusiso Vilakazi. There were talks with clubs around Vilakazi‚ and at no time with anyone who approached me did the number R15-million come up.”Times Media is informed that Kaizer Chiefs and Sundowns aggressively pursued Vilakazi’s signature in the past month‚ and Orlando Pirates also showed interest.Ferreira said it was not just the financial aspect that could not convince Wits to sell their prized playmaker.“There were offers we did entertain with a view to releasing Vilakazi‚ and I can tell you it wasn’t just a financial issue here either.“The offers that came our way were not offers we were prepared to entertain to release our best player.”Wits’ determination to hang on to the player is a sign of their ambition to succeed.“It’s always been the case with Sibusiso Vilakazi‚” Ferreira said. “He’s our best player. Our mandate is to compete and obviously he is an important component in our ability to do that.”Wits are believed to have been willing to entertain a figure‚ plus the right players in a swap deal to remain competitive‚ for their playmaker.– The Times..
