A man, believed to be a professional football player, who allegedly assaulted a police officer, was released on Tuesday, the National Prosecuting Authority said.

Spokesperson Luvuyo Mfaku said the 30-year-old made a quick appearance in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court.

He said that when the docket was handed over to the prosecution, it was discovered that more investigation was needed.

"The docket was referred to the police for further investigation,” Mfaku told News24.

Once the investigation is completed, the docket will be returned to the senior public prosecutor for a decision on whether to prosecute.

"The person was released and the matter was referred to the police to do their investigation," Mfaku said.

Police said earlier that the man was arrested on Monday morning for allegedly assaulting an officer.

"It is alleged that at about 02:00 the suspect was driving a vehicle recklessly and police stopped him," Captain Tsekiso Mofokeng said.

"The police realised that the driver was under the influence and unsteady. When asked to produce his driver's licence the man became violent and assaulted a police officer on the face with [his] hands and [threw] car keys in his face."

Mofokeng said the suspect was overpowered and arrested on charges of assaulting a police officer, drunk driving and resisting arrest.
