SA’s Brazil-based striker Tyroane Sandows could join U23s at Rio Olympics

There is a good chance of South Africa’s Brazil-based striker Tyroane Sandows being included in their Olympic squad‚ SA Under-23 coach Owen da Gama said on Monday. Da Gama said there has been contact with Gremio’s 21-year-old striker Sandows‚ who may join the SA Under-23 team for their friendly against Japan on June 29.The coach was speaking after taking the Bafana Bafana team that comprises mostly his U-23 players through their paces at the Nike Soccer Centre in Soweto on Sunday ahead of their participation in the Cosafa Cup in Namibia from Saturday. Da Gama said apart from the quality they can bring to the U-23s‚ players such as Sandows and Danish-based midfielder Lebogang Phiri – who is part of the Cosafa squad – can help Young Bafana gain information on their opposition at the Olympics. The SA U-23s are grouped with Brazil and Denmark in Rio.“When Dunga was playing in Germany‚ suddenly Germany couldn’t beat Brazil any more‚” Da Gama said.“And Sandows might be joining us very soon. There is a very strong possibility that once we announce the squad for the friendlies against Japan and those following he can be with us.“Sandows is training with Gremio’s first team and playing for their reserve team.“He’s in the country at the moment. There is a good relationship with his father and his manager. [SA Under-23 team manager] Levy Ramajoe has got to take a lot of credit.Da Gama shows his handNational Under-23 head coach Owen da Gama is hoping the inclusion of outgoing Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Reyaad Pieterse in the Bafana Bafana Cosafa Cup squad will push Jody February to work harder to keep his place as the No1 goalkeeper. “I don’t talk to players and managers. There has been some form of contact.”Sandows scored a hat-trick for the SA U-20 team that beat Zambia in their final Caf Youth Championships group match in March last year‚ but could not reach the knockout stage. He has not had an international call-up since.Bafana meet the winners of Group B in Saturday’s Cosafa Cup quarterfinal at Sam Nujoma Stadium in Windhoek.
