Sundowns add two more players ahead of Champions League semifinals

Mamelodi Sundowns have added only two more players to their list of registered footballers of the rest of this year’s African Champions League campaign but surprisingly left the Brazilian centreback‚ Ricardo Nascimento‚ off their list. The window to add more players to the Sundowns list has closed with Lucky Mohomi and Motjeka Madisha‚ the former captain of South Africa’s under-20 side‚ added by the South African champions‚ who are already through to the semifinals. In a surprise move Sundowns left open one place‚ the No 3 jersey‚ which presumably should have gone to Nascimento. The Brazilian scored for Sundowns last weekend against Orlando Pirates in a friendly in Windhoek and has been talked up by coach Pitso Mosimane ahead of the start of the new Premier Soccer League season. The 21-year-old Madisha‚ who played for South Africa from U-17 through to U-23 level and then played at the Cosafa Cup at senior level‚ is still to make his first team debut even though he was registered by the club for the last PSL season.Mohomi has been signed from Free State Stars and is one of three major buys for the club in recent weeks. Besides Nascimento‚ who hails from Academica Coimbra in Portugal‚ there is also Sibusiso Vilakazi‚ but because he was registered by Bidvest Wits for the Caf Confederation Cup this year‚ is cup tied for the Champions League. After Sundowns beat Zamalek in their last Champions League group game last month‚ Mosimane hinted a new striker and playmaking midfielder were due to arrive at the club and the purchases would surprise the local football industry.“I have been keeping two spots for two late signings but I can’t tell you who they are. I can’t say. I can’t talk about players who belong to another team‚” he said at the time.“The players who are coming in are a No 10 and as a No 9‚” the Sundowns coach added. “The No 10 is a top player. You’ll get a surprise‚” added Mosimane‚ saying it was an established African international. But these promised purchases were not made in time for the close of Champions League registration and it is not clear whether they will now be needed.Competition rules state that clubs may register a maximum of 30 players a year. They can register any number before the January 15 deadline and then complete the quota in a second registration window which starts two weeks before beginning of the group phase up and lasts until August 5.Sundowns registered 24 players before the first deadline‚ leaving six places for mid-year additions. They have since added Tiyani Mabunda‚ Percy Tau‚ goalkeeper Thela Ngobeni‚ Mohomi and Madisha.Sundowns cannot replace players who leave and have seen from their original list the departure of Katlego Mashego‚ Ramahlwe Mphahlele and Bongani Zungu...
