The best and the worst: records PSL clubs will want to beat and avoid

17 August 2016 - 17:07 By Mark Gleeson

As the 16 Premier Soccer League clubs set out for yet another season‚ starting with the first group of matches next Tuesday‚ they will all have the chance to challenge the record books. All will be eyeing the long-standing record set in 1991 by Kaizer Chiefs for the most successive wins at the start of the season. It will‚ however‚ be a monumental feat should any side be able to better it in what is now a much more competitive era.At the same time‚ clubs will also look to avoid some of the horror starts that have befallen others in previous campaigns.Former Safa president Nematandani guilty of match-fixing‚ could be banned for six yearsFormer South African Football Association (Safa) president Kirsten Nematandani faces at least a six-year ban from football and 10 000 Swiss Francs (R140 000) fine after being found to have contravened Fifa’s Code of Ethics over the alleged fixing of matches in the build-up to the 2010 World Cup. These are the records to beat and avoid:Best start to a new season:Chiefs won 17 games on the trot from the start of the 1991 season and‚ understandably‚ went on to clinch the title. They started away in Durban by beating Manning Rangers 4-0 and continued the run for just over five months before an away draw at Celtic ended the streak. They remained unbeaten for a further five games‚ their run ending in their 23rd match of the season when Sundowns beat them 2-1 at the HM Pitje Stadium.Last season‚ Sundowns had a 18-match unbeaten run before losing at home to Bloemfontein Celtic but had amassed enough points to win the league.Worst start to the season:In 1993 Highlands Park lost their first eight games of the season. The club had just been renamed‚ having previously been known as Giant Blackpool‚ but were still based in Mohlakeng next to Randfontein. By mid-season the club had been sold again and renamed Welkom Eagles and with all the turmoil it was no surprise they were relegated and faded into obscurity. In 2001‚ Tembisa Classic went through their first 20 league games without winning. Khabo Zondo was fired after 14 games without success and it took replacement Walter Rautmann seven games before he finally engineered a win away at Sundowns.TMG Digital/TMG Sport..
