Sundowns’ Keagan Dolly to be rested after doing duty in Rio

19 August 2016 - 13:11 By Marc Strydom

Keagan Dolly has been given a rest by Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane‚ but is expected to be back in the line-up when they meet SuperSport United in the MTN8 in just over a week.Mosimane intends to rest many of the frontline players who have guided Sundowns to the Caf Champions League semifinals in the Brazilians’ final Group B game against Enyimba in Nigeria on August 23.That fixture will see defending champions Downs out of action on the evening when the rest of the teams in the Premier Soccer League kick off their new season. TMG Digital understands that Dolly‚ arguably SA’s most impressive performer along with former Ajax Cape Town teammate and new Orlando Pirates signing Abbubaker Mobara at the Olympics this month‚ is being given two weeks’ rest by Mosimane.“I spoke to him [Mosimane] the moment I landed back in South Africa. He said I needed to rest before I join Sundowns‚” Dolly said.“I’m just excited going back to my club‚ putting the Olympic experience behind me and just putting all my focus back to Sundowns.“Having played at the Olympics means the world to me. Now‚ it’s just to focus on the senior national team. And take my performances from Brazil to my club and hopefully to Bafana Bafana. “I picked up a slight injury in Brazil in our last game against Iraq. It’s nothing serious‚ just a strain.“But‚ ja‚ I’m ready for the new season and ready to keep on working hard for Sundowns.”Dolly’s wish to keep playing is understandable. The 23-year-old seems to improve with each performance for Bafana‚ the SA Under-23s and Downs and he will not relish breaking the momentum. His impressive displays at Rio 2016 – where SA drew 0-0 against Brazil‚ lost 1-0 against Denmark and drew 1-1 against Iraq – are reported to have increased international interest in the winger‚ with French club Rennes linked to the player.“I know nothing about that. It’s speculation and there will always be rumours‚” Dolly said.“For me it’s to focus on my season at Sundowns. And once something else happens‚ I’ll be open to it.” Dolly seems likely to make his return to Downs in their Tshwane derby MTN8 quarterfinal against SuperSport United at Loftus Versfeld on Sunday‚ August 28. – TMG SportHe believes a Sundowns side boosted by signings Sibusiso Vilakazi‚ Thapelo Morena and Lucky Mohomi can be as dominant as their double-winning campaign in 2015-16‚ despite having barely any off-season break due to their Champions League success.“Sundowns has all the qualities to keep the momentum going and achieve even greater things‚” Dolly said.“At Sundowns any player can play at any given chance. You always have to work hard to stay in the team.“We always want to dominate in every competition we take part in.“With the success in the Champions League thus far and the games we’re playing and the momentum‚ I think that momentum will carry us in the MTN8.“We have the quality at Sundowns to dominate‚ but it’s never easy. We’re the team to beat this season.“Teams are going to start focusing on how we play and already know what we’re going to do when we have the ball.“So it’s going to be difficult but I think we have the quality to do well in everything we take part in this season.” - TMG Sport      ..
