Zesco United’s attacking football and unusually strong generation of players this season attracted the eye of Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane even before the group stages of this year’s Caf Champions League. Now Downs meet Zesco in the semifinals of the 2016 Champions League‚ starting with Saturday’s away match for the Pretoria giants in Ndola‚ Zambia (3.30pm). Mosimane will be more than wary of the club based at the heart of Zambia's copperbelt in Ndola‚ who emerged as a force in their country’s football in the 2000s and have since been leading the way in continental football for Zambian teams.Formed in 1974‚ Zesco were renowned as a yo-yo team between the Zambian top-flight and lower divisions until 2003.Following a commitment by the club’s premier sponsor and investor‚ Zambia’s power utility‚ Zesco‚ to increase their financing of the team‚ Zesco United were promoted back to the country’s Premier League in 2003 and have since stayed there. They enjoyed their breakthrough season‚ and announced themselves as a power to rival Zambia’s traditional big three of Zanaco‚ Power Dynamos and Nkana FC‚ in 2007.Coached by the former Kaizer Chiefs striker Wedson Nyirenda‚ they won a treble of two cups and the league title. They retained the ZPL title in 2008‚ and have since won three more.In 2009 Zesco became the first Zambian club to reach the group stages of the Champions League‚ and they are still only team from that country to contest that phase of Caf’s premier club competition. This year they became the first Zambian club to progress to the semifinals. They had served notice they might be a force in this year’s competition in the pre-group stage knockout phase. They beat Al-Ghazal of South Sudan 3-0 on aggregate in the preliminary round‚ Guinea’s Horoya FC 4-3 in the first round and then thrashed Mali’s Stade Malien 5-2 in the second round‚ with a 3-1 win in the away leg.In the group phase runners-up Zesco were strong at home‚ where they beat Al Ahly 3-2 and Asec Mimosas 3-1‚ before drawing 1-1 against Group A winners Wydad Casablanca.Away they lost 2-0 against Wydad‚ drew 1-1 against Asec and drew 2-2 against Ahly.Their potent attack‚ which has scored 24 goals in 12 games (Sundowns have 13 in 10)‚ has been led by the quick‚ physical DR Congo striker Idris Mbombo‚ who has five goals‚ the third-highest in the competition.Zesco have three of the top eight scorers in the ACL – winger Clatous Chama and Kenyan striker Jesse Were have four goals apiece.Playmaker John Ching'andu has three. Were’s Kenyan countryman Anthony Akumu has been Zesco’s unsung hero doing the hard graft for the club in defensive midfield...
