Eleazar Rodgers is the work-horse to the racing stallions surrounding him in Bidvest Wits’ dangerous frontline this season. Daine Klate‚ Elias Pelembe and now also the explosive talent of Gabadinho Mhango provide the creativity‚ skill and finesse around him.Rodgers‚ though‚ is exactly the kind of centre-forward Wits coach Gavin Hunt likes – tall and cantering and capable of getting involved in the physical exchanges‚ taking out defenders with his strength and intelligent running off the ball. The striker has found a home‚ and a coach‚ at Wits where his contribution and cleverness can be appreciated‚ unlike in a spell at Mamelodi Sundowns from 2012 to 2013‚ where the pressure to score regularly took its toll on Rodgers’s game time.“It’s the work-rate that he [Hunt] likes and also largely about having the right attitude‚” Rodgers said on Thursday.“You have the guys who score the goals‚ but you also have to have the guys who take the knocks‚ and take players out of the game and create the space with the running.“The coach knows what I do well. In the wins against Chiefs and Pirates I didn’t score but I created opportunities for players around me by doing the running and removing defenders.” Wits – tipped for silverware in 2016-17 – meet Pirates for a second time this season at Bidvest Stadium on Saturday night‚ this time in the Premier Soccer League. They hosted the Buccaneers in the MTN8 late last month‚ where Felipe Ovono’s goalkeeping blunders were the obvious difference between two good sides in an uncompromising quarterfinal won 2-1 by Wits.“Pirates are a good side and they can always play on the day‚ so we won’t underestimate them by any measure‚” Rodgers said.“It’s always exciting playing against Pirates‚ and Wits against them can be a good game to watch.“We know that to attain what we want to achieve this season we have to try to win every game‚ and not just every other game.“So against Pirates we want to try and go out and do that‚ and show we’re capable of beating the big teams and being up there at the top.” Rodgers has been the workhorse centre-forward foil to the skills‚ pace and physical presence of deep striker Mhango‚ who has wracked up the man-of-the-match awards early in the season.“With his work-rate‚ he likes to run with the ball and take on defenders‚ and you also just never know what he’s going to do‚” Rodgers said of Wits’ new Malawian striker.“So far he’s won a lot of man-of-the-match awards and he’s been doing well. He’s almost scored in all the games he’s played‚ so that shows he’s getting into the right areas. He’s gaining in confidence‚ too.”“He could convert a few more of his chances. The whole frontline wants to convert more goals.Wits held to goalless draw by 10-man Polokwane CityBidvest Wits were held to a 0-0 draw by 10-man Polokwane City in Tuesday night’s Premier Soccer League match at Old Peter Mokaba Stadium. “We want to create and score more goals. Because if we can do that then for the whole team‚ what we are trying to achieve becomes easier.“The whole squad has got quality in all areas. And the coach is very open and honest about his intention to rotate players.“Nobody can think that they’re going to arrive at Wits and just play all the time. But if you do your job and you play well‚ you are going to get opportunities.“And if you do get that opportunity‚ with all this competition you do want tor try to use it.” - TMG Digital..
