Komphela warns Maritzburg to keep revenge out of equation when they face Chiefs

Revenge can be a slippery slope to hell and Kaizer Chiefs coach Steve Komphela has warned his former employers Maritzburg United to resist the urge to go down this path ahead of a meeting between the two sides on Saturday. Chiefs and United are developing a fierce rivalry that was kicked up a notch after Komphela left the KwaZulu-Natal club to join the glamour Naturena outfit last year. The Telkom Knockout draw has ensured a resumption of hostilities and Chiefs host United in a Last 16 encounter at Soccer City on Saturday. A philosophical Komphela said he prefers to concentrate on his job rather than obsess over whether the visitors still hold grudges.‘‘With me I try not to be a man of vengeance‚” Komphela said in his trademark measured manner.‘‘If you do things seeking vengeance‚ you will never achieve what you want. Even at the back of such an achievement‚ you will still remain a bitter man. So all that I do is get on with my business‚ I am professional.‘‘I accept the fact that I worked with them and I know they are eager to do that‚ but be careful that it doesn’t happen.” Komphela’s departure from Pietermaritzburg in June last year was not without incident and there was a time when the two sides quibbled over what fee would Chiefs have to pay to facilitate the coach's release from his United contract.United chairman Farook Kadodia upped the tempo in April when he blamed Komphela for the team’s poor run of form that saw the club flirting with relegation for the better part of last season."He (Komphela) basically walked away after committing himself to stay and that is what hurt us. It was the biggest disappointment for me‚" Kadodia was quoted as saying at the time. And as if to further highlight the tension between the two sides‚ United were not happy with the officiating after losing to Chiefs in a league match last month.United midfielder Deolin Mekoa also entered the fray this week when he was quoted as saying the visitors are seeking revenge against Chiefs for that league defeat.‘‘The danger of being too desperate to knock something down‚ just a slight slip‚ you get knocked out‚” warned Komphela.‘‘So I am very cautious‚ I do not do that‚ I do not deal with emotions‚ I try to be more rational.‘‘If you become emotional you end up doing and saying things and when you wake up in the morning you say ’did I say that?’.‘‘But if you are rational at the back of the emotions‚ you tend to take the right steps. And when I feel I am about to become emotional‚ I slow down so that I can think properly.” - TMG Digital..
