Ajax’s young star keeper keen to put nightmare 18 months and horror injury behind him

Brandon Petersen is ready to establish himself as the number one goalkeeper at Ajax Cape Town and push on for national team honours after ending a nightmare 18 months on the sidelines with injury. The 22-year-old is now the senior keeper at Ikamva following the exit of Anssi Jaakkola to England‚ and is keeping junior national team players Jody February (20) and Darren Johnson (19) out of the side.A horror broken leg sustained against Mamelodi Sundowns in December 2014 kept Petersen out of football until May this year‚ but having started all five of Ajax’s matches this campaign‚ the youngster tipped to be a future Bafana Bafana number one is raring to go.“It’s been good for me‚ I haven’t played so many game after one another in a while. As the games go on I will get better and better‚” Petersen told TMG Sport.“Jody and Darren are both in the national set-up and to have guys like that pushing you … you are always working because you know they will improve and that if they get the chance to play they will take it.” Petersen‚ now in his fourth season in the Premier Soccer League despite his tender age‚ says he takes his role as the senior keeper in the young group seriously.“I’m the oldest goalkeeper now‚ there is a responsibility for me to set an example for them [February and Johnson]‚ both on and off the field.”And he says working with former Ajax keeper Andre Petim‚ now goalkeeper-coach at the club‚ has been a bonus.“For me it’s good‚ I played with him and he knows us very well. He knows what we can do and what we are lacking‚ so I think it’s beneficial for us having someone who knows us and not someone new coming in that first has to adjust and learn about us.” Petersen is likely to be tested on Saturday night when Ajax‚ who have won none of their five league games so far this season‚ head to SuperSport United for their Telkom Knockout Last 16 clash at the Lucas Moripe Stadium.“We are looking forward to it‚ I know we have had a bad patch of results but the guys are hungry for that first win‚” he said. And he says the fact that the team now has a few players who have spent part of their career in Gauteng will give them an advantage.“Now we have more players that played in Jo’burg and Pretoria‚ so we can adapt quicker to the altitude and all that. The guys have been working on it a lot and training harder‚” he said.“The game against Chiefs when we played away [2-0 defeat]‚ I don’t think we battled physically‚ it was more technically where we struggled and lacked a bit of concentration.” – TMG Sport..
