Carling Black Label Cup still hottest ticket in town

In a week marked by a social media hashtag that was created to help the Lions fill up Ellis Park‚ an off-season exhibition match between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates a few kilometres away will have no such problems. The Lions host the Highlanders on Saturday in a Super Rugby semifinal showdown that rugby fans hope will live up to the pre-match hype. But there is the small matter of filling up the venue as attendances have not been that great for the hosts in this year’s competition.Across town in the south of Johannesburg‚ tickets were sold out weeks ago and almost 90 000 fans will go through the turnstile at Soccer City on Saturday. This exhibition match has no shortage of critics‚ but fans of the two clubs seemingly cannot get enough of the off-season friendly match between the countries most popular soccer clubs. This friendly - nicknamed "The Beer Cup" by soccer fans - has seen more people go through the Soccer City turnstiles than a Springboks vs New Zealand Test‚ Bafana Bafana matches‚ cup finals and even official league games between the selfsame Chiefs and Pirates.Jacques Grobbelaar — the CEO of the stadium operators‚ Stadium Management — said there would be a big security operation in place to ensure the safety of the expected 88 000 fans on Saturday. ‘‘We (will) have just over a thousand private security officers on duty on the day‚” he said.‘‘They will be in the parking areas looking after the cars‚ directing people with valid parking tickets into the parking areas‚ at the access control gates‚ at the emergency gates‚ inside the venue‚ inside the seating areas‚ staircases‚ bar areas‚ suite areas etc.‘‘Then we are bringing in the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department and that will be another 160 to 170 (security) people. "The police will be in high numbers but due to restrictions imposed on us‚ we are not allowed to speak in detail about the security plan. But there you might be looking at another 300 policemen on duty as well.” Medical teams and hospitals in the vicinity of the stadium will also be placed on stand-by on Saturday. Some fans still complain about the event’s existence on the calender six years after its inception and argue that it should have never replaced what used to be the domestic season’s traditional opener — The Charity Cup.We are ready to host the 2016 #CarlingChampionCup on the 30th of July. See you soon champion fans ⚽ pic.twitter.com/t04GBu4Iht — StadiumManagementSA (@OfficialSMSA) July 25, 2016junkBut try telling that to the many supporters who will descend on the venue in huge numbers on Saturday.Better yet‚ try telling that to Chiefs coach Steve Komphela and his Pirates counterpart Muhsin Ertugral. It's 5 days to the #CarlingChampionCup. The @FNBStadium, @JMPDSafety and @OfficialSMSA are ready for Match Day. pic.twitter.com/YatUVshhOA— Carling Black Label (@blacklabelsa) July 25, 2016junkNeither Komphela nor Ertugral will fully be in control of their sides on the day as the gimmick element of the event allows fans to select the starting line-ups through votes.Guess who will take the blame if either team loses? - TMG Digital..
