Vasco da Gama to be renamed Stellenbosch FC after community welcomes club

National First Division side Vasco da Gama is to be renamed Stellenbosch FC following the decision to relocate the club to the Cape Winelands. Vasco‚ who had a single season in the Premier Soccer League that culminated in relegation in 2010/11‚ made the announcement on Wednesday.The club confirmed last month they would be playing out of the Stellenbosch Academy of Sport in Stellenbosch this season‚ a high performance centre that is also used by the Springbok rugby team on occasion‚ and that move now looks permanent."Our club is now based in Stellenbosch and we are fully entrenched in the Stellenbosch and Cape Winelands community‚” COO Edries Burton said.“The community and the people have been extremely supportive towards us and our move to Stellenbosch."The name 'Stellenbosch FC' shows our intention of creating a club that symbolises the Cape Winelands community. We are on a pathway of building something special‚ and we want to take this community with us."The club already has two players from the Stellenbosch area in their squad‚ former Ajax Cape Town striker Alcardo van Graan and national Under-17 midfielder Luke le Roux.Van Graan is one of the rising stars of the domestic game while Le Roux was named Player of the Tournament at the recent COSAFA Under-17 Championships in Mauritius.- TMG Digital..
