BREAKTHROUGH OF THE WEEK

People who are born blind are now finding they may not need their eyes to see. A new device, which has been developed by Dr Amir Amedi and colleagues from the University of Jerusalem, enables blind adults to interpret visual information from sound.

A tiny camera is strapped to the user's head and connected to a computer or smartphone. An algorithm converts images to sound, providing a depiction of an object via headphones.
