VOTING for members of the ANC's national executive committee had to be repeated after two names nominated from the floor were omitted from the ballot paper.

About 800 delegates had already voted when it was discovered that two names were missing.

Commissions had to be stopped and voting started afresh. While the matter was being sorted out, the entire conference had to be stopped because of a storm.

One name omitted was that of Limpopo arts, sports and culture MEC Dipuo Letsatsi-Duba.

The national executive committee is the ANC's highest decision-making body between conferences. It has 80 members and six elected national officials.

Committee members get first consideration for postings to cabinet, top government positions or deployments to state institutions.

Delegates nominated about 186 candidates. The ballot paper had to be reprinted to add the two missing names.

Kgalema Motlanthe, ousted ANC deputy president, stunned delegates on Tuesday when he declined nomination for the committee after his loss to President Jacob Zuma. Motlanthe had earlier signed nomination forms for the positions of president, deputy president and additional member of the committee.

Indications were that Zuma supporters, buoyed by his victory, were intending to purge those who ran with or campaigned for Motlanthe before the Mangaung conference.

Results of the committee election are expected today.
