Top TV star ducks assault charge
Soapie star Rapulana Seiphemo's 28-year-old girlfriend has joined the long list of women who press charges against their lovers only to drop them soon after.
The Muvhango actor was arrested in Honeydew, Roodepoort, on Saturday after allegedly slapping his girlfriend during an argument.
But yesterday Seiphemo's lawyer, Lehlohonolo Adonisi, denied that there had been physical abuse.
Adonisi said an out-of-court settlement had been reached between the woman and her 45-year-old beau, who was earlier seen waiting for his case to be called at the Roodepoort Magistrate's Court.
"I cannot go into details but what I can assure you of is that there was never any violence. It was resolved amicably," Adonisi said.
According to People Opposing Women Abuse spokesman Nonkululeko Khumalo: "There is a high prevalence of women who open cases and withdraw them shortly afterwards.
"This is mainly because of pressure from friends, family, society and the media. Every woman is well within her rights to [withdraw] but we encourage women to see the case through.
"Sometimes society believes these things should be discussed at home and that plays a very big part in the decision."
Muvhango spokesman Kgalema Mametse would not comment, saying only that Seiphemo was "still very much part of the family".
