Construction at Medupi power station will continue despite a strike by thousands of workers, Eskom spokesman Hilary Joffe said yesterday.

"The strike involves only 2000 workers. The rest are working," Joffe said.

The National Union of Mineworkers members went on strike on Tuesday demanding bonuses.

NUM spokesman Lesiba Seshoka said management had given the workers the long weekend off in the hope that they would "cool off".

He said the dispute was over bonuses.

Members of the National Union of Metalworkers who went on strike in January were given bonuses.

Seshoka said the same should apply to NUM members.
