We expect that the parliamentary committee appointed to investigate the Nkandla debacle will look beyond political affiliation and safeguard our constitution. However , as things stand, we are not holding our breath.

The ANC is in the majority in parliament and the ANC-dominated committee will try hard to find reasons to absolve President Jacob Zuma from responsibility.

It was Zuma who, when he campaigned to become president, urged MPs to be activists. Now that he is facing a challenge, MPs should do him the honour and be activists.

We should not be where we are. Our president has failed to safeguard our resources and abide by the rule of law. He should not expect sympathy from the public. We hope the parliamentary committee will look into the matter with open eyes.

There have been investigations into Nkandla by different state institutions. Those found to have flouted the rules should face the might of the law.

Zuma, as head of state, should have known better. His private home should never be our affair. However, because of a desire to please him at all costs, R240-million of public money was used.

The constitution is all that stands between us and corrupt individuals. The ANC should never allow itself to be captured by a faction.

The ministers lining up to speak in defence of Zuma should remember our founding document.

Yesterday we remembered Chris Hani, the SACP leader who was assassinated just before our first democratic election. Hani struggled to free us from apartheid bondage.

Our expectations that those we elect will act in our interests have been betrayed by people who have assumed higher status than their political party grants them.

We hope our MPs will act in favour of the republic. Failure to honour their mandate will be to betray the constitution and all those who died to free us.
