The Gauteng legislature's decision to kick out Economic Freedom Fighters members is unwarranted and only highlights its failure to transform.

Why must branded Western clothing prevail in our institutions?

The EFF's red overalls pose no danger to the proceedings of the legislature.

We, as a country, need to transform and recognise the benefits of doing things differently.

We cannot be locked into colonial tendencies and think that only Western clothing is acceptable in our institutions.

Those who made the decision to bar two EFF members of the provincial legislature from proceedings have exposed their limited thinking.

We should never be defined by the clothing we wear, or the brands we buy.

The EFF's chosen attire should be accepted and respected.

They were placed in the legislature by a section of the voting public.

Those voters seemed not to mind the red overalls, so why should the Gauteng legislature?

The red overalls, just like traditional attire, should feature in our seats of government.

The decision by the Gauteng and Eastern Cape legislatures to bar the EFF from representing its constituency tells us that a number of our politicians still have colonised minds.

It matters not what a man or woman wears, but what they have to say in debates.

Perhaps the dress code should be debated?

We do not need politicians sporting designer labels dictating to other political parties or the public what constitutes proper clothing.

The ordinary citizen is not represented by a swanky suit with a heavy price tag.

The EFF has been voted in and should be allowed to exercise its mandate.

Politicians cannot decide on a whim who is allowed in the legislature; that is surely the province of the electorate.

As proud democrats, let us practise democracy.

Whether or not we wear Gucci, we have a voice. For some, the EFF is their voice. Let it be heard.
