If the thought of dozens of erect penises gives you the willies, chances are you will not enjoy slurping down cocktails at South Africa's first phallic art gallery.

The Phallos Art Gallery, which is dedicated purely to aesthetic tributes to the male member, was established three years ago just outside Grahamstown by the quirky couple Volkher and Claudia von Lengeling.

While attendance at the gallery is fairly limp during most of the year, hundreds rise to the occasion every July during the National Arts Festival.

The couple also operate the Bon Tempo "farm stay" in the Manley Flats valley.

Claudia said the emphasis is on eroticism, not pornography, and female genitalia are not on display.

The adults-only rated exhibition includes more than 100 paintings and sculptures of the penis, as well as phallic food.

"You hungry?" Claudia asks as she carries a breadboard of freshly baked, well endowed white bread rolls - complete with a sprinkling of black pepper to represent pubic hair.

In the garden, on the roof tops, on the walls, on tables - the male member stands tall and proud wherever you look.

The crowning glory is a 2.5m penis of silver and gold foil.

The exhibition, featuring works by 10 local and foreign artists, has attracted more than 400 visitors over the 10 days of the National Arts Festival.

According to the 2014 festival catalogue, the gallery wants to pay tribute to the "old masters" and cited "the ancient Egyptians' worship of the phallic god Min".

"Numerous phallic artefacts from forgotten societies all over Africa reflect the archaic roots of phallic art.

"The mountain caves of South Africa still proudly sport countless Khoisan of majestic phalli."
