In response to a shortage of ambulances in the province, the Gauteng health department is to introduce a live computer patient-booking system.

The system will enable it to improve the transportation of patients and manage the shortage of beds in public health facilities.

During her budget speech yesterday, Health MEC Qedani Mahlangu said the province needed 800 more ambulances.

She said the department would spend over R1-billion on improving emergency services in the 2014-2015 financial year.

Of the R31.5-billion budget, R2.8-billion would be spent on HIV and Aids prevention and treatment.
