Call it wishful thinking but trade union Cosatu is still urging viewers to boycott SABC1 soapie Generations, until the fired "Generations 16" cast members are reinstated.

Loyal fans will be caught in something of a dilemma.

Watch their favourite programme and feed the egos of executive producer Mfundi Vundla and the public broadcaster; or listen to Zwelinzima Vavi and Co by siding with the 16 actors (read: "idols") who were axed on August 18. Either way, The Times has come up with a few ideas about what to do with yourself at 8pm on weekdays.

  • Get off social media: You'll still find lots of morose people bemoaning the fact that they have no scriptwriters or storylines to slag off. Or maybe get invested in a new TV show;
  • Make that call, finally: Remember, 8pm is off-peak time on cellular networks, and Telkom too, if you still use a landline in 2014.
  • Question the meaning of your life: You seriously need to think about how sad your life is if you depend on a 20-year-old TV show to complete your evening. Get a life.
  • Catch up: Remember that fascinating Gawker piece about the cunnilingus renaissance, or The New Yorker analysis of athletes Ray Rice and Oscar Pistorius, and the story of violence against women that you book-marked and never got around to reading?
  • If all else fails: The SABC at least lets you buy DVDs of old programmes, so get into your pyjamas and watch classic Generations episodes with a tub of ice cream and some tissues (watching reruns is not betraying the boycott, right?)
