The City of Cape Town unveiled phase two of MyCiti yesterday, aimed mostly at commuters in Khayelitsha, Mitchell's Plain, Nyanga, Gugulethu, Philippi and Hanover Park.

Mayoral committee member for transport Brett Herron said phase two had two new routes, which would cover 35 communities.

This means the bus service - previously criticised for mainly servicing only the well-off parts of Cape Town - will ferry working class communities.

Construction of the R4.1-billion project will start in mid-2015 in Philippi and Strandfontein Road in Ottery. The first trip is expected in 2020.

The two routes are expected to serve an area with a population of 1.4million residents, with up to 14000 passengers in peak hours.

Currently, one of the busiest routes in phase one - from Table View to the city centre - has an average of 2000 passengers during peak hours.

The Khayelitsha to Wynberg route will serve parts of Nyanga and Hanover Park. Mitchell's Plain commuters will be able to embark where the two routes intersect at Govan Mbeki Drive.

Herron said the city would build 45 bus stops and 25 bus stations along both routes. There will be six park-and-ride facilities for the two routes. Commuters without cars will use "multiple feeder routes" linking them to the two main routes.

The latest route for phase one, the N2 Express Route to Khayelitsha and Mitchell's Plain, was delayed due to disagreements between the city and taxi operators.

Herron said the city had started negotiating with taxi operators on the two routes, though no agreement had been reached yet.

He said he also had a plan to speak to communities that would be affected by the two routes.

"I am going to engage with the Wynberg community tomorrow evening [tonight]," said Herron.

Some Wynberg residents are unhappy because several council houses will be demolished to make way for the new route.
