Former Proteas cricket player Herschelle Gibbs will have to wait 11 months before he appears in court on drunk-driving charges.

The 40-year-old batting and fielding star was arrested in Cape Town at the weekend.

Police spokesman Captain FC van Wyk said: "He was later released and will appear in the Cape Town Magistrate's Court on November 25 2015."

This is the latest in a string of alleged alcohol or drug-related incidents involving Gibbs.

In 2009, Gibbs was treated at a rehabilitation clinic for drug and alcohol abuse.

He was arrested in March 2008, apparently after an incident in Main Road, Sea Point, in Cape Town, and also at that time faced a charge of drunken driving, alternatively reckless or negligent driving.

Those charges were withdrawn.

In July 2010, Gibbs's mother Barbara, was fined for reckless driving.

She was also arrested in 2009 after a collision with motorist Riaz Parker in Ottery, Cape Town.

The Sunday Times reported that the police failed to have a blood sample drawn after the accident and the charge of driving under the influence was withdrawn.

Gibbs' s 2010 biography, To The Point , caused widespread controversy. In it, he revealed how he participated in orgies, drank heavily and smoked dagga while on tour with the national squad.
