Police have identified the man whose body was discovered under bizarre circumstances at Fish Hoek Beach on January 2 and initial reports point to suicide.

The man - dressed in yellow and blue swimming shorts and blue swimming goggles - was tied with cable ties to the mooring block of the shark exclusion net.

Yesterday, police spokesman Constable Noloyiso Rwexan confirmed that the man had drowned.

She said the man's family had asked that his details and the circumstances surrounding his death not be divulged.

The Times has, however, established that the deceased was a local resident who lived on his own and suffered from depression.
