Not one conviction for xenophobic violence

Not a single successful prosecution of a South African who has attacked foreigners or looted their shops has taken place since 2008, when xenophobic violence in this country started.

Amnesty International's Mary Rayner said the lack of consequences was proof that the government was not committed to protecting foreigners.

The NGO's global report on human rights violations released yesterday expressed concern that little would come of the recommendations of the Marikana Commission of Inquiry.
