The newest market in inner city Johannesburg will breathe life into anyone who loves food and craft, and even quad biking.

The city is filled with markets, but few have a history as exciting as the station market. The metal superstructure is in the heart of Newtown's cultural precinct under Old Park station, the city's first railway station.

Commissioned by the Zuid Afrikaansche Republiek and designed by the Dutch architect Jacob Klinkhamer in 1895, the structure is a spectacular example of late 18th-century building. Three entrepreneurs - Anita Kube, Moagi Modise and Ernest Mandizera - have taken over the historic building and created Sunday Breeze.

Shop for food, vintage and modern local clothing and more while you sit, chat and chew. The location affords an amazing view over the Mandela Bridge and downtown Jozi.

The food and music fuses African and Western influences and the vibe is relaxed and casual. Bring a picnic blanket and enjoy a variety of music from electro-house and deep and commercial house to hip-hop and reggae.

"We wouldn't host the Sunday Breeze anywhere else," says Kube. "The location is perfect for our target audience - inner city people looking for a great way to spend a Sunday and cool people from the suburbs looking for somewhere different to go."

She says the venue is a platform for people who aspire to a higher quality of life and sustainable lifestyle, where they can network, socialise and germinate a progressive culture.

  • Sunday Breeze is open Sundays from noon to midnight. Caribbean Sunday on April 5
