Mandela convicted of assault

Mandla Mandela was convicted yesterday of assaulting a motorist. Mthatha Regional Court magistrate Noluthando Conjwa said Mandela had acted contrary to the upbringing he claimed to have received from his late grandfather Nelson Mandela.The ANC MP was convicted on one count of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.He slapped, kicked and stamped on Mthatha motorist Mlamli Ngudle in October 2013 after a fender bender.The Mvezo chief was acquitted on a second charge of pointing a firearm.Last year he testified that he had approached a drunk Ngudle to "pacify" him but had acted in self-defence when he was hit.Conjwa said by snatching the keys from Ngudle's car Mandela had acted "in contrast" with the good upbringing he claimed to have received."This [was not like] a person who was negotiating his way out of an untenable situation."Ngudle expressed relief at the guilty verdict...
