Series to watch: 'Our Perfect Wedding' lights up Twitterati

02 April 2015 - 03:07 By Leonie Wagner

Forget Carte Blanche or family dinners, beating blue Monday starts on a Sunday evening with Our Perfect Wedding. It's not an in-depth or thought-provoking show. It's a tweet-a-second show that's been trending since its first season. Season 5 launches on 12 April. Our Perfect Wedding is a reality series that follows ordinary South Africans in the days leading up to their wedding as they commit life, love and possessions to each other. The preparations are usually disastrous and fans of the show lap it all up. The series has a new host each season, and the current, comedian Tumi Morake, is the perfect fit.Reality series are usually more sordid fascination than funny but Our Perfect Wedding continues to deliver hilarity that sends the ''Twittersphere" into a hashtag frenzy every Sunday.Since the fourth season kicked off earlier this year, the most memorable episode was about a woman who waited nine years for her lover while he served time in a maximum security prison. Talk about dedication. She didn't show the same dedication when she bought her dress aday before the wedding. This season's first episode set the bar for men when the groom, dubbed the "husband of the season" on Twitter, presented his new wife with a BMW 6 series. The weddings range from grand and gaudy to cringe-worthy.It's a reality show that is almost too real. The bride's dress is usually ghastly, the decor is questionable (expect to see plastic flowers) and the love stories are often bizarre. But this is the magic that makes Our Perfect Wedding such a hit.The show details last-minute dress fittings, cake tastings and hair and nail appointments (even for the guys) . Last season saw the show's first inter-racial wedding. The white bride chose a ring studded with black diamonds because she called her beau her "black diamond".The show guarantees two things: A crash course in "what not to do" when planning a wedding and a good abdominal workout.Catch Season 4 of 'Our Perfect Wedding' on Mzansi Magic every Sunday at 7pm..
