Defiant Vavi: I will not call myself a 'former'

Expelled Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi refuses to relinquish his title until a democratically constituted congress tells him to. "I will not call myself a former. I am the only general secretary. I am the only one to be democratically elected in a workers' parliament," he told about 200 shop stewards belonging to the nine renegade Cosatu-affiliated unions, in Cape Town last night.Vavi received a rousing welcome. Numsa general secretary Irvin Jim was billed to join him at the event but was not present.Vavi detailed the attacks launched on him by Cosatu leaders, from accusations of theft to statements that he was an "agent of international imperialism, a spy sponsored by US money working to force a regime change".The nine unions vowed to fight Vavi's expulsion and for the "soul" of Cosatu...
