Police investigate children's shack fire deaths

There have been no arrests after four children died in a Khayelitsha shack fire, police said yesterday. Four cousins, aged between one and six, were killed in Site B, while four other homes were destroyed. Lungiswa Vensile, mother of Zanele Vensile (1) and Azizipho Vensile (3), left her children and their cousins, Ayakha Vellem (6) and Alwaba Vellem (1), in the care of their mother, Zukiswa Vellem.There were reports that the children had been left alone but police spokesman Andre Traut said the circumstances were still being investigated.The cause of the fire is unknown.City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services spokesman Theo Layne said fires in informal settlements were often caused by overcrowding. Many could be prevented if a distance of 3m was maintained between shacks. ''It would help the fire trucks."Many fires were caused by illegal electricity connections which caused short circuits.While paraffin and gas fires were not as common,"it's getting colder and people are using a lot of heating devices, including drum fires which cause sparks. Many structures are also made from combustible materials like cardboard and plastic."A structure "whether informal or not, should have two exits - many structures only have a door and a window, and if there's a fire, they can't get out".At least 1280 shacks were destroyed in the summer fire season...
