Remember our enslavement and value our freedom

A wall of remembrance should be built to honour the Africans who died while being transported to Brazil as slaves in 1794. The discovery of the Portuguese shipwreck off Cape Town is a reminder of when the world treated Africans as commodities to be traded to the highest bidder. We are told that hundreds of thousands of people from east Africa were shackled in ships' holds and transported over 11000km to the sugar plantations of the Americas. We must join the calls for the more than 400 African slaves who died when the Sao Jose sank to be honoured. We believe that a wall of remembrance or some other form of monument will not only honour those forcefully removed from their families and communities but will teach our young the value of freedom and about the world we come from.Slavery shredded the very fabric of African communities.South Africa cannot tell its history without referring to slavery and its effect on who we are today. It is knowledge of that history that will drive us to build an equal society. We hope that researchers will be able to trace the origins of those Africans who were abducted and abused.Today we are engaged in rewriting our history and debating whether to remove statues linked to icons of apartheid or colonialism. But it is important that we see beyond the year 1652 and recognise the cultures that existed in this land long before then.Failure to do so will continue to add credence to the notion that the history of black people began only in 1652.This narrative must be challenged and corrected. We believe that, by honouring our enslaved African brothers and sisters, we can construct a true history of this country and the continent.Minister of Arts and Culture Nathi Mthethwa should drive this process and help build a monument that will be of benefit to our history and our future...
