Good news: SA could have fewer politicians

Only 1% of young South Africans dream of becoming politicians, according to a recent Pondering Panda study. The greatest dream, one which 20% of respondents had, was a medical career. Of this 20%, more than half (58%) wanted to become doctors, 26% sought a career in nursing and 16% sought other jobs in the medical field. Other popular choices were engineering (9%), a job in the financial sector (9%) and a career in law enforcement (7%).Just over 1000 young people aged between 15 and 24 were surveyed.Pondering Panda CEO Diane Gantz said: "The fact that so many hope to gain some form of medical training - and [the fact] that South Africa suffers from a shortage of doctors and nurses - should inspire both our government and educational institutions to find a way to offer young people more paths to a medical career."Just over 20% of respondents wanted to work in the public sector, while less than 1% wanted to work in the charitable sector.In addition to doctors and engineers, South Africa also has a shortage of riggers, boilermakers, welders and carpenters...
