Can Christmas? Heaven forbid

South Africa is a deeply religious country, and faith should be respected. We have 12 public holidays, five of which are specifically Christian in nature. To be just, labour legislation could permit employees, whatever their faith, to celebrate five religious holidays a year. This will give citizens the freedom to celebrate religious festivals without coercion while still being part of the global community. But to wholly subtract religious holidays would be to defile religion and the morals they represent. Keep South Africa sacred. John Grobler, PretoriaFor me as a Christian it would be a tragedy if the government were to do away with the holidays that represent my faith. But I understand that we are living in a multicultural country. My suggestion is that every employee should be given the option to decide which holidays they want to support. The employee must sign an agreement with their employers that they want x,y,z as public holidays. In this way there will always be personnel available in the company, as not all employees will want to take the same public holidays. Yolanda, by e-mailChristmas celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ, our Lord and saviour.Even if the government officially does away with Christmas, we as Christians will not do away with our faith and will still celebrate Christmas even it means taking leave from work. The same applies to Easter, the celebration of Jesus's sacrifice and resurrection.Anti-Christ people are jealous of God, who is omnipotent and omnipresent. The government only believes it is.These holidays are for families to share. Know that God loves us all. Ezra Ryce, PretoriaAbraham Lincoln said: "You can please some of the people some of the time but not all the people all the time."Our constitution says the rights of minorities need to be respected. How do we handle religious holidays then? Christmas and Diwali are celebrated by people who do not necessarily belong to the Hindu or Christian faith. The solution is to replace religion-specific holidays with flexible holidays. Employees will be able to choose which date they want in lieu of the religious holiday. These days will be fixed during the time the employee is employed. Wilby, by e-mail..
