Which was not the reason I chose this one at the recent Pinot Noir Festival held in the gardens of Lady Anne Barnard's former country cottage on the banks of the Liesbeek River in suburban Newlands, Cape Town. It was the sour cherry flavours that sold me. Rather like a boiled sweet on a stick without the sherbet surprise at the end.Although it was the second-cheapest in a range bracketed by the R75 easy-drinking Limelight from De Wetshof and the seriously plutocratic Art of Creation for R850 a bottle from Creation Wines in the Hemel en Aarde Valley, which used to be called Walker Bay before expensive pinot plants took root. Which is, not coincidentally, where the grapes for De Bos were grown by the clever viticulturists of Bosman Family Vineyards on the Groenberg of Wellington. An appellation perhaps a touch too warm for serious pinot and better suited to shiraz, which they grow in quantity for larney brands based in Franschhoek.Natasha Williams makes the stuff, which could explain why this is both an extremely feminine drop and a Fairtrade product. South Africa makes by far the lion's share of Fairtrade wines globally and if they all tasted like this, we'd all soon be in ethical heaven...
