Lotto to go ahead despite judgment

National lottery operator Ithuba said the Pretoria High Court's overturning of the awarding of its licence would not affect its operations. Judge Neil Tuchten yesterday ruled that: "The decision of the Minister [of Trade and Industry Rob Davies] to award the tender to Ithuba is invalid and the licence issue done by the minister is set aside, provided that the operation of the order is suspended for a month."The rewarding of the licence is remitted to the minister for reconsideration."Ithuba yesterday said it was satisfied with the judgment.Ithuba's spokesman, Zukiwsa Nomnganga, said the court's ruling to refuse the application by the previous lottery operator, Gidani, was correct."The judgment was that there were certain irregularities in the licence agreement and it has given the minister, the National Lotteries Commission and Ithuba one month to correct the irregularities."Ithuba assures all parties that there will be no interruption of the national lottery. Ithuba will continue to use all its resources and manpower in ensuring that it delivers a reliable, secure and invigorated lottery network to all South Africans," said Nomnganga.The application for the overturning of the awarding of the licence was brought by Gidani. Its CEO, Bongani Khumalo, said the judgment would be discussed its lawyers...
