Slain businessman hailed as hero

A reward of R10000 has been offered for the arrest of the gunmen who shot dead a Durban businessman while he tried to protect his family. Yashin Bagwandeen, 43, who ran an electronics business from his Westville home, was shot dead on Tuesday in the kitchen in full view of his wife, child and father.Four armed men entered the house posing as customers and held the family at gunpoint. Bagwandeen heard the commotion and when he came to investigate he was shot dead.He was a member of the community police forum in Westville.Suren Balram, owner of security company Trans-Natal Flying Squad, offered a R10000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the suspects.Balram, who did not know Bagwandeen or his family, said after hearing of the killing he decided to offer the reward to help the family. "I want these criminals to be brought to book so the family can get closure."Criminals are getting away. We are trying to do as much as we can to help the community get rid of criminals," said Balram.Police spokesman Major Thulani Zwane said a case of house robbery and murder was being investigated."It is alleged that a family was accosted by the suspects while they were in their house. A 43-year-old male, who is a family member, was shot several times by the suspects. The suspects fled the scene in a motor vehicle. Nothing was stolen and no arrest has been made at this stage. The motor vehicle was found abandoned not far from Pinetown," said Zwane.As news of the murder spread, scores of people posted messages of condolences on social media and called Bagwandeen a hero.Bagwandeen's widow, Larissa, posted on Facebook, "RIP. My Angel, the Love of my soul, God has you in his Loving Arms. You Died Saving us, Our Hero. I Love You."Bagwandeen will be cremated today at the Clare Estate Crematorium...
