Filmmakers shoot for KZN stars

Filmmakers and investors will get up close and personal at a cocktail party launch tonight in a bid to promote KwaZulu-Natal's rapidly growing film industry. It coincides with South Africa's largest film industry networking event, the Durban International Film Festival, which opened last night."Linking film industry stakeholders with investors is an annual event at the Cannes Film Festival, but it's a novel approach for South Africa," said Carol Coetzee, CEO of the KZN Film Commission."We are trying to tap into a market that has, up to now, not been considered."The launch will see captains of industry rubbing shoulders with the likes of South African director Gray Hofmeyr (Isidingo, Jock of the Bushveld), producer Paul Raleigh, who received an Oscar for Tsotsi in 2006, and Sara Blecher, the director of Ayanda, the film that opened the festival last night.The South African movie market generated R2.2-billion in 2012 and is expected to grow to R3.1-billion by 2017.Coetzee says KwaZulu-Natal is being positioned as a globally competitive destination for film production.
