Guatemalan Diego Dougherty Novella became the victim of a robbery just minutes after appearing in the Cape Town Magistrate's Court in connection with the murder of US businesswoman Gaby Alban. Alban's body was found in a luxury hotel covered in faeces on Wednesday. Novella was arrested shortly afterwards and appeared in court for the second time yesterday. He was not asked to plead and the case was postponed to Friday. His defence lawyer, William Booth, said he had taken a few clothing items to him in the holding cells shortly before his appearance as he was wearing the "bare minimum"."I took him a tracksuit top and bottom, a pair of long pants, shirts and shoes. [That same tracksuit top] I gave him while he was in the cells has just been taken off him," Booth said shortly after the Guatemalan's appearance. At Pollsmoor, where he is being detained, there are 28 awaiting- trial prisoners. It is a far cry from the fancy Camps Bay hotel room he had allegedly shared with his alleged girlfriend Alban.According to the UK's Mail Online, his family is a "super rich clan" and among the "most powerful" in central America. But he was allegedly the black sheep.Booth could not comment on these allegations but said his client's family were concerned."I've been in contact with them by way of e-mail and I've had a telephonic call from one of his brothers. They are very upset. It's quite a shock to the family and they indicated they will assist wherever possible," said Booth. But it will be a long road for Novella, who might see additional charges levelled against him by the National Prosecuting Authority, prosecutor Carmen Daniels told the court.Daniels said the state had a strong case against Novella, 41.But Booth has asked the state to provide proof that his client was linked to the crime. He said media reports indicating that Novella and Alban had been involved in a drug-fuelled sex session were pure speculation.Alban's family has travelled to Cape Town and are being supported by the US Consulate.Alban is of Mexican descent and was born and raised in Los Angeles.Cynthia Harvey, spokesman for the US Embassy, said: "We extend our condolences to her family and friends. Out of respect for the privacy of the family, we have no further details to share."..
