Two survive fiery plunge

When a Port Elizabeth mother found herself and her five-year-old son trapped by fire in their four-storey flat, she was faced with an impossible choice. But with both already having sustained burns, Queenie Mthombeni knew there was only one escape: a 10m leap to the grass below.Miraculously, Mthombeni only sustained second-degree burns and a few aches, while Zikhanyo also suffered second-degree burns and a head injury.Family members said Mthombeni, 31, had switched on a heater in her New Brighton flat on Tuesday night. Just after 7pm a fire started , blocking access to the front door.A relative, Nomvuyo Marwanqana, 36, said when she rushed to Mthombeni's flat, she and her son were already lying on the ground."What happened is very sad but we are glad they are both alive," she said...
