Kaizer Chiefs' Mother City matches almost a done deal

The City of Cape Town and Kaizer Chiefs appeared as a unified force at a media conference yesterday to hit back at critics of Amakhosi's decision to play three of their home league matches at the Cape Town Stadium this season. The six professional clubs in the Mother City, including fellow top-flight side Ajax Cape Town, as well as Safa Cape Town, have described the decision as "unacceptable" and questioned whether it was correct to risk taxpayers' money on hosting the games. But executive mayor Patricia de Lille and representatives of Chiefs dismissed the criticism as unfounded. "We have a responsibility to make the Cape Town Stadium a financially viable venue," De Lille said."We know that there are thousands of loyal and enthusiastic Kaizer Chiefs supporters in Cape Town. And so, after carefully considering the various proposals, the City's special events committee has recommended the approval for Kaizer Chiefs to play three of their matches in Cape Town."Though the decision still needs to be ratified by a sitting of council next month, with De Lille's support it seems inconceivable that it will be halted now, bar a legal challenge.Neither De Lille nor Chiefs marketing director Jessica Motaung would comment on the figure that the Soweto club would receive for bringing the games to Cape Town."An appearance fee will be paid to Kaizer Chiefs, while the city will also make our services available on match days," De Lille said...
