Gauteng teachers in dispute limbo

Thirty-two Gauteng teachers, including former principals, have yet to resolve their outstanding labour disputes with the provincial education department's district office. In a written reply to the education committee last week, the department revealed that one teacher's dispute has yet to be resolved after eight years while another teacher is still waiting for a resolution after four years.The department' s stated goal is to resolve disputes within three months.Until these disputes are resolved, substitute teachers have to fill the posts.Nearly 20 of the teachers reporting to the office have disciplinary cases against them.The charges include misconduct, assault, financial irregularity, carrying out corporal punishment, and sexual harassment.Other teachers have been accused of poor performance.Gauteng education spokesman Phumla Sekhonyane said that to "allow due process to proceed without any interference", the teachers were moved to the district office and placed at a school or unit where they assisted in administrative tasks, the marking of test papers, library duty and workshops.Sekhonyane added that MEC Panyaza Lesufi had prioritised the "speedy resolution" of labour matters and appointed labour relations specialists, leading to 80% of disputes being resolved within 90 days...
