Business owners in Kalk Bay are overjoyed at the City of Cape Town's announcement that long-term work on Main Road will be put on hold from December 15 to January 24. A one-lane stop/go system while water mains and the road are upgraded has caused long delays for months."[The roadworks] seriously impact our business. I think everyone is happy about [the holiday respite] but I wish they could stop it for longer," said Merinda Meintjes, general manager of Harbour House restaurant.Gary Galvin, general manager of the Brass Bell, said the roadworks had hit night trade hard, and the city council decision was "amazing"."We miss all the people from the southern suburbs side. A lot of people don't want to stop at the stop/go at night," said Galvin. The mayoral committee member for transport, Brett Herron, said: "I am confident that this temporary break will make a trip along this scenic route much more pleasant during the festive season. Once completed, the rehabilitated road structure and underground services will last another 30 years, without the need for major maintenance."..
