Taxi operators affected by Durban's multibillion-rand integrated rapid public transport network can walk away from the industry or work with the city. Speaking at a briefing, eThekwini Municipality's public transport deputy head, Mlungisi Wosi-yana, said taxi associations directly affected by GO!Durban have the option of forming a company to negotiate a 12-year contract with the city to operate on various routes."But at the end of the day, each individual operator will make a choice in terms of compensation for the withdrawal of their operating licence, whether they want to take their payout or go into other sectors or buy shares into the vehicle-operative entity with which we will negotiate a contract," he said.Wosiyana said a survey was being conducted to establish the identities of the affected operators."We want a win-win situation for all involved and we want to ensure that no one becomes worse off because of Go!Durban," he said.Mayor James Nxumalo yesterday revealed that the first phase of the R20-billion project, the C3 corridor from Pinetown to Bridge City, near KwaMashu, will "be a reality in the next 16 months".SA National Taxi Council provincial deputy chairman Bheki Mbambo said taxi operators were not happy with the municipality's proposal."We have been negotiating and we will continue in good faith, but the municipality is not transparent. They are not giving us all the information to make a decision."The survey to find out who is affected should have been done before the construction started."..
