An Eastern Cape man has lived to tell the tale of how people are being killed at Glebelands hostel in Umlazi, Durban. The man says he fled from people who have killed 22 of his friends, four in the past two months."I had to run for my life. I am in hiding. I don't know when my time is coming," he said.He said "known warlords" told people they were going to kill them - then made good on their threat."When people are starting to [ extort] money, we know that someone is going to die. [Hitmen] are roaming around the hostel, but the police aren't doing anything. Police are scared ."The man said that last year he was shot by a man who said: "'You are full of s**t Mpondo, I will kill you' and he shot me."He was shot in the hand and lower body, the bullet just missing his kidney.According to Vanessa Burger, an independent community activist, 53 people have been shot dead since April last year."There's a hit list and police know about it. It's well-known in the hostel," said Burger."Police are telling us that Amampondo are troublemakers and we should be deported to the Eastern Cape," the man said."Premier Senzo Mchunu said we must stop this, but its continuing." ..
