Afrikaans moviegoers 'demanding variety'

Afrikaans films are preparing to take a short left, but not before director Darrel Roodt delivers his take on a white Christmas. Roodt's film, Trouevoete, which he's described as a Christmas comedy, will premiere in cinemas across the country next month and while the romantic comedy genre is as Afrikaans as melktert, he said supporters are "over it".Afrikaans dramas like Dis Ek Anna, by Sara Blecher, is an example of this shift within the Afrikaans market.Roodt said: "The Afrikaans market is diversifying; there's a loyal audience that has proved they will go to the movies but they don't want to be spoonfed the same thing."Afrikaans filmmakers are starting to realise there's more to explore than some derivative of the romantic comedy."This "romcom" recipe is arguably the reason why Afrikaans films have fared better at the box office over the years than other local films. But actor Bouwer Bosch who stars in Trouvoete said people were often fooled by the big numbers and thinking filmmakers earn a lot of money.Roodt explained that the market was diversifying. He said the challenge was finding the balance between reflecting South Africa's reality and maintaining integrity.Bosch said: "A lot of film-makers are scared to take chances. Afrikaans people are so loyal but then if you do something like [an interracial relationship], they don't want to see it. There's still a section of our supporters who are very conservative. So it's tricky to keep everyone happy."That's our history. You feel guilty if you do it, but you feel guilty if you don't do it."..
