South Africa is in "extra time" in negotiations to secure duty-free access of the country's agricultural products to the US, Trade and Industry Minister Rob Davies said yesterday. The US government has not yet blocked South Africa from receiving the benefits of its Africa Growth and Opportunity Act (Agoa), but the deadline of December 31 set by US President Barack Obama for completion of an agreement had not been met, Davies admitted.Sticking points are related to granting access to US poultry, beef and pork to local markets.Discussions between US and South African veterinarians are due to take place tomorrow. Davies hoped the US would allow more time for an agreement to be reached.Disagreement centred on the acceptable level of salmonella in chicken and procedures to be followed if it were to be detected during testing at ports of entry.Davies addressed the media flanked by Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi and Agriculture Minister Senzeni Zokwana.Davies said if the US did suspend Agoa access on specific agricultural products, this could be lifted if agreement was reached later. Discussions would continue regardless of whether or not the US cancelled South Africa's benefits under the act. ..
