Another star goes out

The name of Mondli Cele was added to the grim list of footballers who have perished in car accidents after the Maritzburg United winger tragically lost his life yesterday morning. The 26-year-old was killed just hours after scoring for his club in a 3-3 draw against Orlando Pirates on Saturday night.The incident comes only months after Ajax Cape Town defender Cecil Lolo died in a car accident. It is also under a year since Free State Stars' forward Richard Henyekane suffered the same fate. Former national Under-23 captain Cyril Zuma was also killed when he was struck by a car last September.Add to that the names of former Orlando Pirates striker and rising star of South African footballLesley Manyathela, Pirates midfielder Gift Leremi, ex-Bafana Bafana assistant coach Thomas Madigage and four players from Polokwane City who perished in 2012, and the list of football fatalities on the road makes for depressing reading.Cele was a player with a growing reputation after a slow start to his career.Scouted by then United assistant coach Mandla Ncikazi, who watched him in a Nedbank Cup game against Santos, and after being invited for a trial Cele signed for The Team of Choice.He made his debut for Maritzburg against Mamelodi Sundowns at the start of last season and became an instant regular in then coach Steve Komphela's lineup.He featured in 29 of United's 30 league matches, and their two cup games, scoring three goals.Such was his form that he received a call-up to the Bafana Bafana squad in November 2014, though he did not win a cap.Injury curtailed his involvement in this campaign, but in recent weeks there were signs that he was getting back to his best...
