Early Birds: High at the crack of dawn

27 January 2016 - 02:33 By Rea Khoabane

Take a beautiful venue where you can watch the sunrise over the city, add wireless headphones on which DJs play a great soundtrack, throw in dancing and top up with energetic early risers and you have the latest fad to excite the good folk of Joburg - Secret Sunrise. More than your average early morning workout, Secret Sunrise is hosted every second week on rooftops across the city.Venues have included the Living Room (Maboneng), Ethel Grey Park (Edgewood), Hyde Park Corner rooftop parking lot, Higher Ground (Peter Place), and 13 Venue (Braamfontein) , but the organisers keep the upcoming location secret for added intrigue. My first experience of the event was in Kramerville last week on the rooftop of 3 Desmond, from which we could see over the treetops and buildings of Sandton.Getting up before sunrise isn't usually part of my routine, but the thought of dancing as the sun came up with a bunch of other enthusiastic people got me excited enough to get up and go.On entering the venue we were given a pair of headphones. I put them on and heard a voice instructing my movements."Welcome everyone, this is Secret Sunrise," said founder and instructor Jamie Beron over the headphones. We started with our eyes closed, doing a yoga session before the dancing and kicking began. The high energy part of the session was like a silent disco with old-school 1960s and 1970s music. It was themed according to South African history and what was happening in our country when those songs first played."We hope that by having these themes we'll help bring people together and engender a better community spirit. I believe that these sessions will help to cultivate change," said Beron."We appreciate diversity and we aim to share this movement with anyone who's willing to receive it."By breaking down preconceptions and by pushing people out of their comfort zones we're helping our 'Sunrisers' experience a greater sense of freedom and connectedness and hopefully a vast array of emotions, too."The free-spirited hipster started Secret Sunrise Johannesburg because he believes the sessions are a great platform to help people feel free, express themselves and reap the benefits of letting go.It originated in Cape Town."As a movement we aim to take Secret Sunrise to the furthest reaches of both our imaginations and our planet," said Beron. While the neighbours are oblivious, those that take part in the hour-long event (up to 200 people) get lost together in the moment, on the same vibe, communicating only through eye contact.''These morning interactive dance sessions are an opportunity to be free, childish, expressive and often a little ridiculous," says Beron. The next event takes place on February 4.
